A Bit of History From the Owner... From before 1902 through 2008, the 1135 Rutherford
Road house in the village of Rutherford has served at least six owners and many
more families as a boarding house with two rented cottages, later torn down. The lot
had walnut trees like the adjoining orchard (now vineyards) and earlier, prunes. The
house originally had two bedrooms downstairs and eight bedrooms upstairs with stairs
both inside and outside. There was a pump house and well, still used for the gardens.
The property has always had a garden, fruit trees and flowers. For several years, the owners raised chickens and eggs here for use at their El Real restaurant.
The 1135 Rutherford Road house was remodeled from its original structure with a full
front porch and back porch. The ranch-style house of the fifties got a further update
with three picture windows and was also extended to include what is now the kitchen
and family room. A foundation for the main house was rebuilt in the ‘60s, a new roof
with totally new tresses was put on in the 80’s and a new leach line installed in the 90’s.
