Old farmhouse gets historic status
The Varrelmans want to maintain the architectural integrity of their 115-year-old St. Helena house.
Last week, they successfully sought the planning commission's decree that the 1467 Kearney Street home is, indeed, a historic structure.
Mel and Rose Varrelman, who own the house known as the Chiles/Elgin residence, asked for the designation "to allow us to preserve the architectural integrity of the structure."
Although included in the 1978 Napa County Historic Resources Inventory, prepared by Napa Landmarks Inc., the residence's notation did not include a historical description of the house, only a photograph. The Varrelmans felt a written interpretation designating the structure as historical was important to keep the exterior at its present design.
According to research by John Whitridge of Napa Landmarks Inc., "The property is significant due to its simple farmhouse style of architecture, connection to the pioneer settlement family of Joseph B. Chiles and connection to the family of William A. Elgin, a prominent local businessman and goverment officials.
"Based on its style, the house was probably built around 1875 (it possibly may have been moved from another site.)"
Whitridge noted that the house has retained its simple form "but also exhibits design details of high workmanship."
The property was owned, 1899 to 1902, by Phinehas S. Chiles, a relative of Joseph B. Chiles, a Napa County settler. Alyce Elgin Lannoy, daughter of William A. Elgin owned the property between 1902 and 1924.
William Elgin was a county supervisor, deputy assessor, justice of the peace, town trustee of St. Helena, postmaster and town treasurer in the years 1859 to the early 20th century.
Mel Varrelman is serving his third term as Napa County supervisor. Rose McMahon Varrelman is a teacher at Robert Louis Stevenson Middle School.
